vicryl not disolving. any advice?

Postby felix » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:29 pm

Mrs Boobs had 2 huge lumps removed 4 weeks ago.
she still has 2 visible vicryl stitches that are poking out (but that I'm not able to pull out), and i can see another 3 purple bumps where they are under her skin.

Surely 4 weeks should be enough for them to have disolved?

Are some rats allergic to vicryl?
In most rats they seem to disolve fully and quickly, but in one of my rats (lesley) they were there for ages (in fact some of them, til she died). and rather than being absorbed as they should, they cause a bit of inflammation and come towards the surface of the skin, as if the bodys trying to (unsuccessfully) expell a foreign object?
So I suppose maybe I'm being impatient as I'm imagining what happened with lesleys might be happening with Mrs Boobs too.

What can i do to help Mrs Boobs get rid of them?
Should she be on anything in case they cause infection/inflamation? (the couple that are sticking out have caused a little scab)

It's really annoying, especially as she has a home lined up (pending successful intros) and I want her to be able to get there asap, or at least know what to tell her new owner in terms of what to expect or what further treatment might be necessary
Can anyone advise me?

Yes some rats do seem to have a reaction to the stitches, the best bet is to show the vet if you haven't already.

The three purple bumps are probably the stitches themselves, there is a purple vicryl. One of our girls was spayed and she always had the stitches under her skin, they never dissolved and it didn't bother her. I showed the vet and she said that they don't always dissolve. If there is no actual inflammation, it probably is purple vicryl that was used. Hopefully they will dissolve at some point, but if they don't, it isn't a problem. But like Joolz said, if there is a problem at the op site, it is best to consult the vet.
